I’m back to answer more of your marketing questions.
As I mentioned in an earlier post, I’m trying to get away from giving ‘unsolicited advice’. I’m looking for peeps with real marketing questions. So, if you have some – send them on. In my last post, I wrote about the importance of rapidly and clearly communicating exactly what you sell on your website’s homepage. This week, I’m answering another website question.
Q: What’s one thing you’d fix about my website?
A: I’ve had several clients come to me over the past 6-12 months seeking help with a new website. I always start these conversations by asking them what they think is working with their current site and what’s not. I often hear, “My website isn’t generating any leads.” Not good, right?
From there, I usually hop on their site for a quick look and to my dismay I sometimes find that they do not have a single CTA anywhere on their homepage. SIGH.
A CTA is a call to action. If you have ever subscribed to an email newsletter, registered to learn more, or even added an item to your cart, you’ve responded to a CTA.
“If you want a visitor to do more than read your homepage and bounce off, it’s important that your website has various calls to action.”
CTAs are important for two reasons:
#1: They can be used to drive visitors into potentially making a conversion.
#2: They help increase your click-through rate, which is the number of pages an average visitor views when they visit your site. This is important for SEO as a high click through rate makes your site look reputable to search engines.
When a client tells me that their website isn’t generating any leads and they have absolutely zero CTAs on their site, I try to get them to add some as rapidly as possible. Even if they are planning to ultimately launch a new site, every day their current site lacks a CTA they are losing the ability to convert visitors to prospects.
“You wouldn’t throw a party without serving your guests some food and drinks or offering some type of entertainment, would you? Don’t build a site that offers NADA for your visitors to do!”
